Stockholm-based Mikael Blomkvist, co-owner and co-editor of Millennium magazine, has lost a high profile libel case caused by an article he wrote on businessman Hans-Erik Wennerström. This loss has got the capability to ruin Mikael professionally. Therefore, he leaves the magazine at the different co-owner/co-editor, Erika Berger's hands. Even in the hands of Erika, the magazine is also suffering because of the scandal and consequent lack of ad sales. 

Because Mikael abilities being a journalist, he receives an offer by aged and wealthy Henrik Vanger to solve the case of presumed dead and his lost grand-niece, Harriet Vanger, who was just sixteen at the time of her disappearance. Despite the generous economic settlement, which could save magazine of Henrik, Mikael has been habituated to perform the job until Henrik adds one object of compensation that money can't buy. Mikael will largely perform the work on Hedeby Island off of Hedestad in northern Sweden, the island where Harriet was seen, and at which almost all of the dysfunctional Vanger family lives, they who are among the suspects. Without them knowing that his principal task will be to find the killer of Harriet to your household, Mikael is writing a chronicle of this Vanger family.
